Congratulations
to the shipmate of the
month
BRUCE HEVNER
Hello, I'm Bruce
Hevner and I was
born & raised in
Cleveland Ohio.
 |
|
Bruce
Hevner
HT2,
70-73 |
I
loved cars from
a young age
(especially race
cars). Engines
have always
intrigued me; I
used to take old
lawnmowers apart
just to see what
made them tick.
I lied about my
age to get a job
at a gas station
before I even
had a license.
About this same
time (1966) I
started hanging
around a race
engine building
shop. I was
there so much
the owner gave
me a job
sweeping floors.
I learned the
machine shop
trade quickly
and began
operating the
machines and
assembling race
engines.
About this time
(1969) I was
watching TV one
night and they
were showing one
of the Cruisers
shooting those
big pop guns.
That struck me
as a “cool”
thing to do so I
decided to
investigate the
Navy! A trip to
the recruiter
and next thing I
know (Jan 1970)
I’m freezing my
nutz off in
Great Lakes
Illinois!!!
They decided in
basic that
because of my
machine shop
background I
would be a good
Damage
Controlman so
off to “A”
school in
Philadelphia.
Upon finishing
“A” school I
received orders
to the Mighty
Mispillion where
I spent my
entire
enlistment
working in “R”
div. Came aboard
as a DCFN in
1970 and left as
a HT2 in 1973.
Shortly after I
came aboard I
met Arnie
Gallenbeck (also
a DC). We became
good friends and
did a lot of
“steaming”
together. Around
2001 he found me
on the Internet
by accident
while looking
for someone
else. It was
about this same
time that a
couple of other
shipmates
started locating
each other and
the idea of the
2003 reunion in
San Antonio took
shape. Seeing
all those guys
again after 30
years was a REAL
experience!!
I worked the
hardest I’ve
ever worked and
played the
hardest I’ve
ever played
while on the
Mispillion. Did
a lot of growing
up during my
time in the
Navy. Saw some
truly amazing
sights and did
some things I
STILL won’t own
up to today !!!
Wouldn’t trade
it for anything!
Left the Navy in
1974 to return
home and work in
the race engine
shop. In 1975 my
sister
introduced me to
the gal I am
still married to
today (Reyne).
We were married
in 1976 and
moved (along
with my father
who was
retiring) to
South Carolina.
We still live in
Anderson, SC
along with our
two sons Aric
(22) and Brett
(18).
In 1978 I opened
up my own engine
rebuilding shop.
I ran it for 18
years until I
decided that my
hobby
(computers)
would make a
better
profession than
engines. I
closed my shop
in 1996 and went
to work for
Milliken Corp on
their Year 2000
computer
conversion team.
I left Milliken
immediately
after Y2K and
started my own
Small Business
Computer
consulting
company. And
that is what I
do today,
installing and
maintaining
Small Business
Server networks.
I stay involved
with racing by
operating a
machine shop
part time for a
local CarQuest
store.
I would like to
take this
opportunity to
thank Steve
Dengler for all
the work he does
behind the
scenes to keep
these reunions
going and to Dan
MacNeil for
keeping the web
site ship
shape!!.
Hope to see ALL
of you shipmates
in Charleston
this October!!!

Christening Of The USS Mispillion
This is a photo of my
maternal grandparents Dr. Charles Edward Feddeman
and Ethel Margurite Coe Feddeman.
My
grandmother is christening the USS Mispillion.
The pin that she is wearing and another like it on
my grandfather’s lapel is a commemorative pin and is
around here someplace. When I find it I will scan it
and send you an image. Interestingly, my sister
still has the box that the champagne came with. It
was used to store doll clothes when we were
children. There are other pictures in the family
collection of the christening day and people in
attendance. When I come across any I will send them
along if you like. Martha M. Ferguson

I just received this message from the Adams Class Veterans Association "ACVA". The ACVA is attempting to acquire the "USS Charles F. Adams DDG-2" from the government in order to make a museum ship out of her. A team of former Navy members conducted a survey on board the ship to ascertain whether or not she was fit to be made into a museum. CLICK HERE to see their preliminary findings. USS Charles F. Adams DDG-2 is the last surviving Adams Class Guided Missile Destroyer that is any where near salvageable. It is hoped that the ACVA will be successful in their endeavor.

James McEachin Wins Best Film Short Award at 2007 GI Film Festival
June 01, 2007 Entertainment: Film News
(PRLEAP.COM) The 2007 GI Film Festival Awards (GIFF), announced May 28, 2007 in Washington, DC named OLD GLORY written, produced, and directed by James McEachin, as the 2007 winner in the Short Film category.
The winners of the 2007 GI Film Festival (GIFF) Awards were announced by festival Directors Brandon Millett and Laura Law-Millett at the Ronald Reagan International Trade Center in Washington, DC. GIFF exclusively celebrates the successes and sacrifices of the American military through the medium of film. The three-day festival was held May 26-28 2007, Memorial Day Weekend. Festival participants include R. Lee Ermey (MAIL CALL, FULL METAL JACKET), Billy Blanks (founder of Tae-Bo), Pat Boone, and Gary Sinise (FOREST GUMP, CSI) who was honored with the 2007 GIFF Spirit Award for his excellence and commitment to honoring soldiers and veterans.
As the winner in the Short Film category, OLD GLORY proudly displays McEachin’s mission of commemorating those who have served and are serving in the United States Armed Forces. OLD GLORY profoundly captures a dramatic sense of patriotism in a cinematic portrayal that pays tribute to America in a way only a Silver Star and Purple Heart veteran, accomplished actor, and award-winning author dares.
An Old Soldier. A New Mission. One mission accomplished.

Get your name engraved in bricks
USS Mispillion Shipmates (or those of any other ship) can get their names engraved in bricks. The bricks make up a couple of walkways at the Navy Memorial Park in Long Beach, California.
It's a good chance to literally engrave in stone your service or in memoriam of another person. I made sales of some bricks with several more outstanding until the purchasers can think of what they want engraved on them. CLICK HERE FOR MORE DETAILS

This
letter to Steve
Dengler from
Dave Latimer
has some very
good info on
asbestos cancer.
Hi Steve,
Thank you for
taking time out
of your day to
reply!
As you may have
noticed, I am
with the
Mesothelioma &
Asbestos
Awareness
Center. We aim
to provide the
most current and
accurate
information
regarding
asbestos
exposure and its
link to
mesothelioma
cancer. As you
know, many Navy
veterans were
unknowingly
exposed to
asbestos while
working in
shipyards, and
while onboard
ships and
submarines. I
chose to contact
you today
because the USS
Mispillion is
one of those
vessels. When
built at Sun
Shipyard,
asbestos was
used as an
insulator for
many parts of
the engine room
and boiler room.
That said, in an
effort to spread
awareness about
this terrible
disease, I am
trying to reach
all those who
understand this
devastating
disease and the
importance to
get good
information out
there. I would
invite you to
visit our site,
especially our
Navy section at
www.maacenter.org/veterans
. I am confident
you will find
that we have
compiled a large
resource for
those who may be
suffering from
the disease or
have family
members who are.
I would like to
share this
resource with
your browsers,
and would ask
you to point a
link to some
portion of our
navy section
that you feel
would be the
most pertinent
to your
browsers.
(Possibly our
Sun Shipyard
Page -
http://www.maacenter.org/jobsites/shipyards/sunshipbuilding.php)
I look forward
to your reply
and feedback.
Thank you for
all the work you
do.
Kind Regards,
Dave Latimer |
